Even during the summer months, Georgia's high school wrestling champions are making headlines.
Wesleyan's T.J. Mitchell and Matt Bridges of Cherokee both took home national titles at the NHSCA Open Wrestling Championships, held last month in Myrtle Beach. Here's how some of the state champions fared in the prestigious national event:
- T.J. Mitchell, Wesleyan: Already one of Georgia's finest and only a sophomore, Mitchell, dominated to add the 112-pound national title to his Class AA 103-pound state crown.
- Matt Bridges, Cherokee: Bridges was Class AAAA's 125-pound champion last season, and he won the 135-pound class in Myrtle Beach, including a 6-2 decision in the final against Union Grove's Jacob Vinson.
- Taylor Knapp, Collins Hill: Knapp, the 135-pound Class AAAAA titlist, won the 145-pound national title.
- Travis Sheehy, North Gwinnett: The 152-pound Class AAAAA runner-up last season, Sheehy was impressive at NHSCA, going 6-1 and finishing third.
- Michael Slaughter, West Laurens: Slaughter also finished third at NHSCA in the 125-pound weight class just five months after winning his second consecutive Georgia state championship.
- WORTH NOTING: At the NHSCA Midwest National Duals, Team Georgia finished second to perennial power Pennsylvania. The team was led by undefeated wrestlers Slaughter, Alex Maus (Kennesaw Mountain), Bridges and Damon Cadle (Cass), and one-loss wrestler and two-time Georgia state champion Justin Martin (Cass).
